The Introduction to Engineering
Design course was first offered in 2018-2019 as an introductory course to the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering Program and
was open to CHS
students in grades 9-12. PLTW Engineering is intended for students who are interested in design and engineering. The
major focus of this course is to introduce students to design processes, research and analysis,
teamwork, communication methods, global and human impacts, engineering standards, and technical
documentation.

Students will learn and use the design thinking process, technical sketching, 3D
computer modeling, precision measuring, math, and reverse engineering in order to identify and design
solutions to a variety of real world problems.
This course will benefit students who plan to major in
engineering in college as well as those students who are enrolled in 3-hour block technical programs
and plan to go directly to work in the fields of manufacturing and engineering.

The PLTW Principles of Engineering class is the second engineering course
offered. This course includes simple and compound machines, circuits, and different energy sources in the Energy and
Power unit. The Control Systems unit includes sensors, hydraulics, and pneumatics. These units use
the Vex robots to build examples and student designs.

The Materials and Structures unit includes
statics with vector and truss calculations and modeling, material properties, and material testing
including hands-on experiments. The final unit, Statistics and
Kinematics, rounds out the course to give students skills with data and motion. All units include a professional piece and a project at the
end of the course to put together the skills learned in each unit.
