Health Science Technology is a program for high school students that stresses knowledge, skill, and professional attitudes for a wide range of careers available in health services. This program provides the student the opportunity to develop the skills and attitudes necessary to enter the health care career field or prepare students to advance in their education in health care.
Overall employment in healthcare occupations is projected to grow 13% between 2021 & 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations; this increase is expected to result in about 2 million new jobs over the decade. In addition to new jobs from growth, opportunities arise from the need to replace workers who leave their occupations permanently. About 1.9 million openings each year, on average, are projected to come from growth and replacement needs.
Job opportunities abound for nursing aides and assistants in response to an increasing emphasis on rehabilitation and the long-term care needs of an increasingly elderly population. In fact, the Department of Labor projects that the increased demand for health care services, led by the growing proportion of the elderly population, is expected to continue for a full 50 years!
The median annual wage for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations (such as registered nurses, physicians and surgeons, and dental hygienists) was $75,040 in May 2021, which was higher than the median annual wage for all occupations of $45,760.
